There are some reasons behind these decisions from the trainers. Such professionals are well aware of the issues a potential racing greyhound may have. The possible reasons behind the decision 

One of the various reasons behind trainers making the greyhounds run a long distance is that the potential contenders are good breakers but not fast enough to get clear in sprints. It may be that they are slow out of the box despite finishing in good positions in sprints. Dog racing is not like horse racing. In dog racing, if a dog finishes nicely, it does not mean that they are speeding up at the end of the race. Another crucial reason behind a trainer dropping a greyhound to a sprint is, they are trying to freshen the dogs a little bit. There is no denying that after running in one or multiple long races, a dog is bound to feel tired. This method can also be used for getting the dogs a lower grade. This way; when they are put in a longer race, the contender will be well-rested and reduced in grade. It will help them to get a win. The trainer may place the dog in a few longer races for stretching them. Either way, you should trust the trainer for choosing the race distance for a greyhound.
